Post-doctoral position in Cognitive Neuroscience

Applications are invited for a full-time post-doctoral research position in the Center for Research in Cognition & Neurosciences (CRCN) at Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB), Belgium. The position is covered by an Interuniversity Attraction Poles (IAP) project funded by the Belgian Science Policy Office (Belpso). The whole project, coordinated by Axel Cleeremans (ULB), is titled “Mechanisms of conscious and unconscious learning” and involves four Belgian Universities and two UK teams. The candidate will work more specifically on a work package of that project titled “Mechanisms of cultural learning”, under the supervision of Régine Kolinsky, head of a the Research Unit in Cognitive Neurosciences (Unité de Recherche en Neurosciences Cognitives, UNESCOG), which is one of the 5 ULB units that constitute the CRCN.

The acquisition of literacy, namely the capacity to read and write, is perhaps the most important transformation that humans impose on their own brains. An increasingly larger number of studies show that literacy acquisition profoundly modifies several cognitive systems not only in the language domain but also in the visual nonlinguistic domain (e.g., on face processing), and perhaps even at higher cognitive processing levels (e.g., working memory, executive functions, reasoning). The aim of the project is to examine in details these impacts of literacy acquisition. We will preferentially compare illiterate and literate adult populations, and/or pre-reading children and age-matched beginning readers, using behavioral methods, brain imaging, and/or ERPs. Brain-imaging training studies on literate people learning new scripts may be performed as well.

Candidate requirements
We seek candidates working in Cognitive Neuroscience, preferably with experience in EEG and/or fMRI, and preferably with good knowledge of Portuguese (for testing of adult illiterate populations). The candidate will have to do design and run experimental work on the cognitive and/or brain consequences of literacy.

We offer onsite laboratory facilities ( and a highly interdisciplinary and active research environment at the CRCN.
The position will be funded and renewable on yearly basis for up to two years.

Starting date: from January 2015 (at latest September 2015)
